The rapid spread of the COVID-19 virus has surprised the world, generating a state of tension, especially in pharmacies, health centres and hospitals, due to the shortage of masks, sanitary protection and breathing equipment. In light of this situation, there are many special initiatives that have emerged from the world of 3D printing with ideas and designs that can meet some of these needs.

The CZFB; the multinational, HP; and the technological leader in industrial 3D printing equipment, Leitat have all made their professionals and their technological knowledge available to authorities and health centres, in order to respond to the needs that may arise in fighting against the spread of COVID-19 through additive manufacturing technologies. The Consorci has also offered to facilitate the coordination of its resources to any individual project being carried out which is looking to scale up to an industrial level.

This initiative has also been extended to the European Union, the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism of Spain, and the Catalan Parliament. The CZFB management have contacted the European authorities to share the list of equipment, resources and materials available to cover any need connected to 3D printing: from technical staff, designers, operators and production managers, to state-of-the-art equipment, which includes software tools, printing machines and post-processing of printed parts.

In addition, the Consorci de la Zona Franca de Barcelona is offering its expertise to companies and entrepreneurs, to pass on their 3D printing ideas and projects, which may help curb the massive spread of the coronavirus and protect the health of all citizens, but especially healthcare professionals.
